About Charles de Foucauld
Charles Eugène de Foucauld de Pontbriand, Viscount of Foucauld, who had lost his faith as a teenager, went on to become a French soldier, explorer, Catholic priest, and soldier again. His writings and teachings served as an inspiration for the Little Brothers of Jesus and other religious organizations. Up till the time of his murder in 1916, he continued his labor of faith.
Early Life
It’s been stated that some of his ancestors participated in the crusades. At the age of six, he lost both parents. In 1868, he enrolled in Strasbourg high school after schooling at the Saint-Arbogast diocesan school. He applied to the Saint-Cyr Military Academy in June 1876 and was accepted. He was assigned to the Algerian 4th Chasseurs d'Afrique Regiment.
Religion
He entered Notre-Dame des Neiges in 1890. He quit the order after serving for seven years and started a life of prayer. In Viviers, France he was ordained in 1901. He relocated to the Sahara in French Algeria and then took on the religious name Charles of Jesus.
He was slain on December 1st, 1916, having opted to stay among people in Tamanrasset.
Honors
On May 15, 2022, a ceremony was held to canonize him.
