About Dan Brouthers
At the plate, Dan Brouthers was a power hitter in a time when both speed and contact were highly valued. He possessed the physical prowess and mental acumen to become an early baseball star in terms of his home run abilities. In addition to being inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1945, Brouthers won the NL batting title four times.
Early Life
The baseball player was born to Michael and Annie Brooder. Throughout his youth, he participated in organized baseball leagues, from the neighborhood sandlots to the semi-professional Actives of Wappingers Falls.
Career
The baseball player made his professional debut for Troy Trojans in 1879. He spent a short but successful year with the team before joining Buffalo Bisons from 1881 to 1885. Brouthers also played for the Detroit Wolverines from 1886 to 1888. He had short spells with popular teams such as the Boston Reds, the Baltimore Orioles, and the Philadelphia Phillies. He played for the New York Giants until his retirement in 1904.
Accomplishments
2-time NL home run leader in 1881 and 1886.
2-time NL RBI leader in 1883 and 1892.
He was inducted into the Buffalo Baseball Hall of Fame in 1985.
He was placed sixth on the list of greatest players of the 19th century by a survey conducted by the Society for American Baseball Research.
Marriage and Children
He tied the wedding knot with Mary Ellen Croak. The couple had four children together. He remained married to her until his death in 1932, aged 74.
