About David Leestma
David Leestma is a former astronaut who participated in three space missions in 1984, 1989, and 1992. He has spent approximately 532.7 hours in space.
Education
After graduating from Tustin High School, Leestma enrolled at the US Naval Academy, where he earned his degree in aeronautical engineering at the top of his class. After his first year of service as a lieutenant, he received his master’s degree in aeronautical engineering from US Naval Postgraduate School Academy.
Time at NASA
After earning his NFO wings in 1973, Leestma continued to serve in the Navy before joining the National Aeronautics & Space Administration (NASA) in 1980. He embarked on three space missions: the STS-41-G Challenger, STS-28 Columbia, and the STS-45 Atlantis. After his flights, he was appointed Director of the Flight Crew Operations Directorate.
Honors
Leestma has received numerous honours and awards, including the Navy Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and three NASA space flight medals. In 1998 and 2004, he received the Presidential Rank of Meritorious Executive.
