About Doc Severinsen
Doc Severinsen began attracting attention at the age of nine years when he was crowned the winner of a local trumpet competition. Four years later, he started performing with a band before forming a quartet known as ‘Blue Notes’.
He joined the Ted Fio Rito-led Orchestra after completing his high school education and together they toured many cities in the United States. His breakthrough came in 1949 when he was hired by NBC to perform on their late-night show titled “Tonight Starring Steve Allen”.
The American trumpeter is famously known as the leader of the band on NBC’s “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson”.
Personal works
Severinsen has gone on to complete many projects as a solo artist. After releasing such hit songs as "I Wanna Be With You", the musician has gone on to record many successful albums including “The Tonight Show Band with Doc Severinsen” and “Unforgettably Doc”.
Family
Outside showbiz, he’s known as Carl Hilding Severinsen. He’s the son of Carl Severinsen and Minnie Mae. In 1964, he married Evonne Nyman but their union ended in divorce in 1976. Four years later, he tied the knot with Emily Marshall.
Interesting facts
He has also worked with other prominent musicians including Urbie Green, Gerry Mulligan and Lena Horne.
During the Second World War, he served in the US Army.
He started performing on radio in 1946 when he made his debut on KODL.
Due to his father’s work as a dentist, he was nicknamed “Little Doc”.
