About Donald Byrd
Donaldson Toussaint L'Ouverture Byrd II joined jazz music collective Jazz Messengers to replace Clifford Brown in 1954. He performed with the collective until 1956. Byrd played the trumpet and was also a vocalist. He made a name for himself as a sideman for other successful jazz musicians.
Education
He studied at the Cass Technical High School before moving to Wayne State University where he received a bachelor’s degree in music. He also attended the Manhattan School of Music for his advanced degree.
Death
He passed away aged 80 in February of 2013.
Trivia
As a sideman, he recorded songs and performed with the likes of Ahmad Jamal, Art Blakely, Al Grey and Hank Mobley.
