Before actively participating in the acting world, he represented “J Walter Thompson” advertising agency. When it was time to sign a contract to become a part of the entertainment world, he signed it in the name of Ed Gardner instead of Ed Poggenberg and that was how he changed his name.
In 1931, he produced “Coastwise on Broadway” and went ahead to write and direct “After Such Pleasures”, a Broadway comedy. He eventually switched to radio where he wrote, directed and produced radio programs. “Duffy’s Tavern”, a program he created brought him fame. He moved his radio show to Puerto Rico in 1949 to avoid tax but his show was not very successful there.
