About Edi Rama
Albanian statesman Edi Rama began his journey in the political circles in 1998 when he was selected to the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports position. After two years, he was named as the Mayor of the city of Tirana and served in that position for eleven years.
Known for his association with the Socialist Party of Albania, Rama was appointed as the chairperson of the political group in 2005. Eight years later, the Tirana-born politician was elected as the Prime Minister of the country. His mandate was renewed in 2017 after defeating Democratic Party’s Lulzim Basha.
Other works
Prior to starting his political career, Rama worked as an artist. A painter, he participated in many art exhibitions. Some popular art centers that he has showcased his crafts are New York City’s Jano Gallery and the National Art Gallery in his native country.
As a writer, this well-known politician has published many books with the most popular one titled “Reflections (Refleksione)”. His other famous publications are “Kurban” and “Edi Rama”.
Controversies
Aside from his successes in the political scene, Rama has been the subject of a number of criticisms over the years. Prior to the Parliamentary elections in 2017, he was accused of electoral fraud. He became unpopular two years later after his government introduced a debatable media law which gave power to some government institutions to fine media organizations and journalists.
Family
At birth, he was named Edvin Kristaq Rama. He’s the son of renowned sculptor Kristaq Rama and his partner Aneta Rama. The politician is the older brother of Olsi Rama who has worked with the Partizani Tirana soccer club as a sporting director.
Until 1991, he was married to Matilda Makoçi, an actress. Their union produced a son named Gregor. In 2010, he became the husband of activist Linda Basha. Four years later, they welcomed a son called Zaho.
Education
Rama is a product of Albania’s Academy of Arts.
Trivia
He played basketball during his early years and was known for his association with the team known as Dinamo Tirana.
He’s the first person to serve as the Prime Minister of Albania for three consecutive terms.
