Born Elaine Iva Berlin and professionally called Elaine May is a legendary American comedian, actress, film director, playwright, and screenwriter. She gained initial fame in the 1950s, performing her improvisational comedy acts in the duo “Nichols and May.”
May is one of the most influential people in the American entertainment industry. She has performed and acted on numerous stages and films and earned many awards and accolades during her over 60-year career.
Background & Early Life
She is of Jewish ancestry and was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her parents were stage actors and theatre directors. By age 10, she had acted in over 20 stage plays with her parents’ theatre troupe.
She attended Hollywood High School but dropped out at age 14 due to her low interest in academics. She later joined the improvisational Chicago theater group, “Compass Players.”
Major Works
In 1957, she collaborated with fellow theater actor, Mike Nichols, to form one of the world’s most influential improvisational groups, “Nichols and May.” They have sold out many shows on the famous “Broadway” stage and won several Grammy Awards.
Her most notable film appearances include “California Suite (1978)”, “Enter Laughing (1967)”, and “Luv (1967)”.
Major Honors
May earned the “National Medal of Arts” in 2013 for her enormous contributions to the American comedy industry.
