About Sheldon Harnick
2016 Drama League Award winner Sheldon Mayer Harnick was a popular American lyricist and songwriter best known for musicals such as "Fiddler on the Roof" and "Fiorello".
Early Life
He lived most of his youth in Chicago and was born into an American Jewish home. He graduated from Carl Schurz High School and then enrolled in the Northwestern University School of Music from 1964 to 1949.
Career
Harnick focused a lot on musical theatre and produced his first work, "New Faces of 1952" in 1952. The recognition he garnered encouraged him to produce more successful dramas such as "The Body Beautiful" in 1958, "Fiorello!" in 1959 and "The Apple Tree" in 1966. He also made some contributions to other productions such as "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg" in 1979 and "Fiddler on the Roof " in 2004".
Personal Life
The lyricist first married Margery Gray in 1965 and then divorced and remarried Elaine May from 1962 to 1963.
Achievements
Harnick received an honorary doctorate from Northwestern University in 2018. He won three Tony Awards from 1960 to 1965. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1972.
