About Elihu Thomson
Elihu Thomson was a great American inventor and electrical engineer. He is widely remembered for his significant discoveries in the study of alternating current (AC), which played a major role in developing successful AC motors and helped develop many electrical companies in America and Europe. He was also the President of "MIT" between 1920 and 1923.
Background & Early Life
He was born in Manchester, England. However, his family relocated to Philadelphia, USA, during his early childhood. He was a 1980 graduate of Central High School, Philadelphia, and taught chemistry at the institution for ten years. However, in 1880, he left his alma mater to conduct various research studies in electrical engineering.
His Inventions
During his career, he partnered with his former teacher Edwin J. Houston and co-founded the "American Electric Company." His notable inventions while working at the company included his ac motor, automated three-coil dynamo, arc-lighting system, improved X-ray tubes, watt-hour meter, and power and high-frequency transformers. However, the company's name was changed to "Thomson-Houston Electric Company" after the "Lynn" company bought high controlling stakes in it. It was finally changed to the "General Electric Company" in 1892.
He made numerous inventions and held over 600 patents.
