About Flip Wilson
Flip Wilson was the stage name of American comedian and actor Clerow Wilson Jr. He set a record in the 1970s when he became the first African American to have a successful variety show on television. He hosted the show, “The Flip Wilson Show” from 1970 to 1974. Prior to getting his breakthrough as a guest on “The Tonight Show” and “The Ed Sullivan Show” in the mid-1960s, he had performed as a stand-up act in various nightclubs and at the Apollo Theater.
Family Life
He grew up along with nine siblings. After his mother, Cornelia Bullock abandoned them when he was seven, his handyman father, Clerow Wilson Sr. sent most of them to foster homes. He was married to Lavenia Patricia Dean from 1957 to 1967 and then to Tuanchai MacKenzie from 1979 to 1984. He had one child with the latter and four with Blonell Pitman, his common-law wife.
Achievements
He won two Emmy Awards and one Golden Globe Award.
Death
He died on November 25, 1998 from liver cancer.
