About George Poage
In the history of the Olympic Games, George Poage is known to be the first black-American to win a medal at the competition. He recorded this feat in 1904 when he won a couple of bronze medals in the 200 meter and 400 meter hurdles.
The American athlete entered the Games following an impressive performance in college. His talent earned him many admirers including the Milwaukee Athletic Club who sponsored him to participate in the competition.

He lost his father, James, at an early age and was raised by his mother alongside other siblings.

Poage moved to the University of Wisconsin after completing his education at La Crosse High School.

In 1998, he was posthumously selected into the Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame.
