About Harry Brearley
Harry Brearley was a brilliant English metallurgist, famously credited for inventing stainless steel. His invention brought more quality and affordable cutlery to the general public and increased the trade of silverware globally in the 20th century.
Background & Career
He attended Woodside Board School. Unfortunately, due to a lack of finances, he left school at age 12 and began work as a laborer at a chemical laboratory and steel works company in Firth.
He soon began studying metallurgy and later solved many practical and industrial problems in the field. By his early thirties, he had earned a reputation as an outstanding metallurgist. In 1908, he was the senior research scientist at the "Brown Firth Laboratories." He also became the director of "Brown Bayley's Steel Works" in 1925.
In 1941, he set up a charitable fund, "The Freshgate Foundation," which has awarded many educational grants to individuals and organizations since its establishment.
Discovery of "Stainless Steel"
In 1913, during his research at the "Brown Firth laboratory," he accidentally added chromium to molten iron. However, he realized that his accidental combination produced an alloy immune to rust. He initially called the alloy "rustless steel," later known as "Stainless Steel."
