About Henry Louis Gates
Henry Louis Gates is an American professor, author, literary critic, documentary filmmaker, public intellectual and essayist. Having been an educator since landing his first lecturing job at Yale in 1976, he also taught at Cornell University and Duke University. In 1991, he joined Harvard University, where he earned the title of University Professor in 2006. He is also the Director of the school’s Hutchins Center for African and African American Research. He is also known for his work on history and genealogy docuseries such as “Finding Your Roots” and “The African Americans: Many Rivers to Cross”.
Family Life
His parents were Henry Louis Gates Sr. and Pauline Augusta Coleman. He had two daughters from his first marriage to Sharon Lynn Adams which lasted for 20 years (1979-1999). He later married Dr. Maria Iglesias Utset, a historian.
Achievements
He became a MacArthur Fellow in 1981. He has also received a National Humanities Medal amongst others.
