About Humphry Davy
Humphry Davy’s immense contributions to the field of chemistry cannot be overstated. The English chemist and inventor is credited with the discovery of the following chemical elements: sodium, potassium, strontium, calcium, boron, magnesium and barium; through the use of electricity.
He is also known for his invention of the Davy lamp in 1815. He served as the 23rd President of the Royal Society and held memberships of the Geological Society of London, Royal Irish Academy and American Philosophical Society.
Family Life
He was the elder brother of doctor and amateur chemist John Davy. He had three other younger siblings while growing up in Penzance, Cornwall. His parents were woodcarver Robert Davy and Grace Millet. He was married to Jane Kerr from 1812 until his death.
Achievements
He was awarded the Copley Medal, the Rumford Medal and the Royal Medal.
Death
He died on May 29, 1829 after suffering from a stroke.
