Ilhan Abdulahi Omar is a Somali-American politician, who began serving in the U.S House of Representatives for Minnesota’s 5th congressional district in 2018.
Family Life
Her parents are Nur Omar Mohamed and Fadhuma Abukar Haji Hussein, who died when she was 2. She was the youngest child of seven other siblings including an older sister, Sahra Noor.
She has birthed three children, including her daughter Isra Hirsi who became the principal organizer for the US school strike for climate.
Achievements
She is regarded as the first Somali-American legislator and one of two Muslim females to be part of Congress.
Within three months of assuming office in 2018, she introduced the “No Ban Act”, co-sponsored the Yemen War Powers Resolution and helped extend the DED status for Liberians in Minnesota.
Time Magazine listed her as part of their “Firsts: Women who are changing the world”, while featuring her on their September 18 issue cover in 2017.
In 2017, Vogue listed her family among the “five families who are changing the world as we know it” in the February 18 issue.
Trivia
She has been married and divorced twice to two different men, Ahmed Abdisalan Hirsi and Ahmed Nur Said Elmi. Although she reconciled with her first husband in 2018, she filed for divorce again in October 2019.
Her family fled the Somalian civil war when she was 8 and sought asylum in the US in 1992.
