About Jean-Baptiste Colbert
Jean-Baptiste Colbert was a renowned French statesman whose works helped to organize the country’s political system. His economic ideas led to what was later known as ‘Colbertism’. In 1661, under the administration of King Louis XIV, he was appointed as the Chief Minister of France and served until 1683.
Four years after his appointment, he was selected as the Controller-General of Finances. In addition to his position, he also served as the Secretary of State of the Maison du Roi and the Secretary of State of the Navy. During his time as the Chief Minister, he helped to improve the country’s economy. In 1665, he oversaw the construction of the Manufacture royale de glaces de miroirs.
Personal Life
He was married to Marie Charron and had three children including Jacques Nicolas and Jean-Baptiste.
Recognition
The famous politician was a recipient of the Order of the Holy Spirit.
Trivia
Colbert has been credited for establishing a number of institutions including the Academy of Inscriptions and Medals, and the Academy of Architecture.
A French Navy ship, which was launched in 1928, was named after him.
