About Jerry West
The Logo
Jerry West is an American retired player who played in the National Basketball Association (NBA) from 1960 to 1974, all with the Los Angeles Lakers. He is famously known for being the person – or more accurately, his silhouette – featured in the NBA’s logo. He is a one-time NBA Champion (1972), a one-time NBA Finals Most Valuable Player (1969), and a fourteen-time NBA All-Star (1961 – 1974). West was originally drafted as the second overall pick in the 1960 NBA Draft by the then-Minneapolis Lakers.
Outside the Court
After a brief coaching career from 1976 to 1979, West turned his attention to front office management, helping build the Lakers dynasty in the 1980’s (dubbed as the Showtime Lakers), kept the team afloat in the 1990’s, and ushered in the Shaq-Kobe era in Los Angeles during the early 2000’s. He also had a hand in the resurgence of the Memphis Grizzlies in the 2000’s and the Golden State Warriors in this current decade.
