About John Foster Dulles
American diplomat and politician John Foster Dulles is remembered best for his immense contributions to the foreign policy of the United States in the era following the Second World War (especially during the Cold War period).
He worked in international law under the New York-based law firm, Sullivan & Cromwell before officially venturing into politics. From July to November 1949 he was the United States Senator from New York as appointed by New York Governor Thomas Dewey. His best-known time in politics was from January 1953 to April 1959, when he served as the United States Secretary of State.
Family Life
Former United States Secretaries of State John W. Foster and Robert Lansing were his grandfather and uncle respectively. His parents were Edith and Allen Macy Dulles, a Presbyterian minister.
He had three children with his wife, Janet Pomeroy Avery.
Achievements
He was conferred with the Sylvanus Thayer Award, and Medal of Freedom posthumously.
Death
He died from colon cancer complications on May 24, 1959, a month after he had resigned from office as Secretary of State.
