About John Watts Young
John Watts Young was a famous American astronaut who until 2004 worked with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
Career
He made history in 1983 as the first person to make a journey to space on six different occasions. He made his first trip to space in 1965 aboard the Gemini 3 mission. He went on to command other projects including the Gemini 10, and Apollo 16. With the latter, he became the 9th person to step on the moon. Between 1974 and 1987, he served as NASA’s Chief of the Astronaut Office.
Family
He spent his early years with his parents Wanda Howland and William Young. The renowned astronaut divorced Barbara White before marrying Susy Feldman. He was survived by two kids named John and Sandra.
Education
After leaving Princeton Elementary School, he joined Orlando High School. He later joined Georgia Institute of Technology.
Awards
He was decorated with numerous awards including the NASA Distinguished Service Medal, the Congressional Space Medal of Honor and the Distinguished Flying Cross.
Trivia
Before joining NASA, he was a member of the US Navy and fought in the Korean War.
He served in four different spacecraft which included the Space Shuttle, the Gemini and the Apollo Lunar Module.
