The young American gymnast, Julissa Gomez specialized in artistic gymnastics. She was a member of Berla Karolyl’s gymnastics club as well as the Great American Gymnastics Express (GAGE) club.

She was the eldest child of Ramiro and Otilia Gomez.
Career Highlights
Gomez started to participate in gymnastics at an early age. By age 14, she was among the gymnasts who competed at the 1986 U.S. Championships and took the fourth position. The position she achieved qualified her to participate in international competitions.
As a gymnast, she worked with equipment such as the beam balance and the uneven bars. She also received training from remarkable coaches such as Bela Karolyi and Al Fong.
Death
The young gymnast at the age of 18 met her untimely death in 1991. The accident came about when she was practicing for the final round of the World Sports competition held in 1988. She slipped off a springboard and jammed her head into the vaulting horse. She instantly became paralyzed and after three years of struggling for her life, her family lost her to an unknown infection.
Trivia
Her death led to the introduction of new and safe gymnastic equipment such as the springboard mat.
