About June Jordan
The American writer wrote extensively on topics such as civil rights, LGBT rights and feminism. Some of her works include “Passion” (1980) and “New Life” (1975).
She married Michael Meyer in 1955; their marriage collapsed after ten years. They had a son named Christopher David Meyer.
Education
She studied at Barnard College and University of Chicago
Career
She promoted the use of Black English in literary works and exemplified this in her works “Dry Victories” published in 1972 and “Kimako’s Story” (1981).
Jordan also published “On Call”, a collection of her articles in 1985 in which she featured works “Nobody Mean More to Me Than You” and the “Future Life of Willie Jordan”. Ten years later, “I Was Looking at the Ceiling and Then I Saw the Sky” was published. Her work “Kissing God Goodbye” followed two years later.
Honors
She was awarded the Rockefeller grant for creative writing (1969 – 70). The writer also received a New York Council of the Humanities Award in 1979.
She became a National Endowment for the Arts fellow in 1982 and was awarded the “Achievement Award for International Reporting” by the National Association of Black Journalists in 1984.
Legacy
Her political essay and 27th book “Some of Us Did Not Die” was posthumously published
Death
On June 14, 2002 she passed on as a result of breast cancer.
