He was from Darmstadt, Germany. Growing up, he loved to perform various chemical experiments with his father, who then owned a science laboratory for his chemical manufacturing business. Justus later studied and earned a chemistry degree from the “Prussian University of Bonn.” In 1822, he received his doctorate in chemistry from the “University of Erlangen.”
Scientific Contributions & Achievements
Liebig was amongst the earliest chemists to discover that although fulminic acid and cyanic acid shared the same composition, they were different compounds.
He was widely referred to as the “father of the fertilizer industry” due to his groundbreaking findings on trace minerals and nitrogen as crucial plant nutrients. He also formulated the famous “law of the minimum,” which explained how plant growth depended on the rarest nutrient resource rather than the total resources available.
Additionally, he created the earliest method for producing beef extracts and popularized the “Liebig Condenser” for condensing vapor.
