About Kathleen Kennedy Townsend
American attorney and politician Kathleen Kennedy Townsend worked at a law firm after leaving law school in 1978. Two years later, she got employed as Michael Dukakis’s (Massachusetts governor) policy analyst. She lost her first political bid when she contested a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives on behalf of Maryland’s 2nd congressional district in 1986. She was chosen as Parris Glendening’s running mate in the 199 Maryland gubernatorial election, which they won. She went on to serve as the 6th Lieutenant Governor of Maryland from 1995 to 2003.
Family Life
She is the first of assassinated senator Robert F. Kennedy’s eleven children. Since 1973, she has been married to David Townsend, whom she met during her time as a student at Radcliffe College. They had four daughters together but lost their second, Maeve in a canoeing accident in 2020.
Trivia
She has chaired the University of Maryland’s Institute for Human Virology.
