About Kay Starr
The American pop and jazz singer was a queen of the jukebox in the mid-1950s with popular hits such as “The Man Upstairs” and “My Heart Reminds Me”. She was one of the few non-blacks who stamped an indelible mark on the blues genre of her age.
Early Life
Born in Dougherty, Oklahoma, Kay Starr was featured as a singer in musician Joe Venuti’s orchestra at age 18.
Career Highlights
After some performances in saxophonist Charlie Barnet's ensemble, she pursued a solo career with Capitol Records. A decade later, she hopped on the American record label RCA Records and recorded the hits song “Wheel of Fortune.” Another big leap for her was her version of Irving Taylor’s Christmas song “Everybody's Waitin’ For The Man with the Bag.” Her 1950 rendition of “Bonaparte’s Retreat" was a huge success racking up a million sales.
Honor
She was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame for “Wheel of Fortune” in 1957.
