He was an American jazz pianist, composer, saxophonist and a recognized classical pianist. He was seen as one of the most original and creative jazz musicians to appear during the late 20th century.

Background & early life
Jarrett was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania, United States. He grew up in suburban Allentown where he was quickly exposed to music. He was a musically talented young child who started piano lessons before he was 3 years old and when he was five, he showed up on a TV Talent program hosted by Paul Whiteman.
At 7 years, he gave his first formal piano recital. He played works by composers such as Mozart, Bach, and Beethoven and concluded with two of his own compositions.
He was a student of Emmaus High School in Emmaus, Pennsylvania where he learnt jazz and became skilled in it. After completing high school in 1963, he moved to Boston and schooled at Berklee College of Music. While there, he played cocktail piano in local clubs. A year later he relocated to New York City where he played at the Village Vanguard.
Career
He performed with many jazz performers Art Blakeley, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Miles Davis, and Charles Lloyd after stopping musical studies. In the early 1960’s, he created his own trio with Charlie Haden (Bass) and Paul Motian (drums).
From 1969 to 1971, the group became a quartet with the addition of Dewey Redman (saxophone). Jarrett formed another quartet in 1971 with Jan Gabarek, Jo Christensen and Palle Danielsson. He also formed a Standards Trio in 1974 with Gary Peacock and Jack DeJohnette.
In 1983, he was diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome and compelled to take a two year break. He made a comeback to the music scene in 1999 with “The Melody at Night With You”. He performed with various orchestras and as a solo artist.
Awards
Jarrett received the French Grand Prix du Disque for Jazz in 1971 and the Guggenheim Award in 1972. He was honored by Rolling Stone as their Jazz Artist of 1973. He was also named Down Beat’s “Composer and Pianist or Artist of the Year” in 1974, 1975, 1994, 1996, 1997 and 1998.
He received the Prix du President de la Republique from the Charles Cros Academy for “Recording of the Year” in 1991. He was also the winner of big European and Japanese Recording Awards.
