About Lionel Stander
After making his film debut in 1932, American actor Lionel Stander was quickly recognized for his raspy voice. He starred in many classics and played several roles, most notably his role as the eccentric chauffeur in the TV mystery series “Hart to Hart.” The 1930s was perhaps his most prolific period, having starred in many films, including “Hooray for Love”, “We’re in the Money”, “The Gay Deception”, “If You Could Only Cook”, and “The Milky Way”, among others.
Early Life & Career
Stander attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he appeared in some student film productions. His began his acting career in 1928, but it wasn’t until four years later that he had his breakthrough with the movie “In the Dough.” Two years later, he was cast as Rothenstien in “The Scoundrel”, a 1935 drama film directed by Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur. The film starred Noël Coward, Julie Haydon and Rosita Moreno.
The 1930s also saw him appear in movies such as “A Star is Born” and “The League of Frightened Men.” Stander’s distinct voice also gave him the opportunity to get into radio acting.
Controversy
In the 1950s, Stander’s acting career was badly affected after he was alleged to be a Communist Party member. Despite him being blacklisted, he continued to act in theater and also worked as stock player and broker before returning to the movies in the 1960s. The decade saw him appear in productions like “Blast of Silence”, “The Loved One”, “Cul-de-sac”, and “ A Dandy in Aspic”. The latter, which was directed by Anthony Mann, saw the actor cast as Sobakevich. He was in a cast that included Laurence Harvey, Mia Farrow, Peter Cook and Tom Courtenay.
Personal Life
Lionel Stander was married six times and fathered six daughters. He died of lung cancer in 1996.
