About Lorin Maazel
Few people can boast of a profession they started at childhood, Lorin Maazel makes that list. As a child prodigy, composer and consummate conductor, he was truly one of the most esteemed conductors of his time.
Background
Maazel was born on March 6, 1930 in France to a musical family; his grandfather was a violinist, his father was a piano teacher, and his mother founded the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra.
At the age of seven, Maazel studied under Vladimir Bakaleinikov, a Russian composer. He then made his debut the following year, conducting the University of Idaho Orchestra in Schubert's “Unfinished" Symphony in Los Angeles.
At twelve, he toured the United States to conduct major orchestras. Aside from being a great conductor, he devoted time to mentor young artists, this was his goal when he launched the Castleton Festival in 2009.
Achievements of Lorin Maazel
He became the music director of the Orchestre National de France in Paris in 1977.
Maazel served as the principal conductor of Vienna State Opera in 1982.
The composer was also appointed music consultant and director of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra from 1984 to 1996.
He served as chief conductor of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in Munich in 1993.
Death
He breathed his last in 2014 at the age of 84. The cause of death was due to pneumonia.
