About Magdi Yacoub
Magdi Yacoub is the co-founder of the Magdi Yacoub heart foundation, and a retired professor of cardiothoracic surgery at Imperial College London. He is also the founder and editor of the Disease Models & Mechanisms.
Family
He got married to Marianne Yacoub
Education
Yacoub studied medicine and cardiology at the University of Cairo’s College of Medicine.
Medical Career
He worked with cardiothoracic surgeon Donald Ross as rotating surgical senior registrar to the National Heart and Chest Hospitals.
In 1968, he went to the United States and worked as a teacher and later Assistant Professor at the University of Chicago.
After his return to England in 1973, he became a consultant cardiothoracic surgeon at Harefield Hospital
Between 1986 and 2006, he was the British Heart Foundation Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the National Heart and Lung Institute at the Imperial College Faculty of Medicine, performing heart valve surgeries and Ross procedures.
The surgeon retired from the National Health Service in 2001 at age 65. He continued to perform surgeries on children through his charity organization, Chain of Hope.
Achievements
Yacoub performed the UK’s first joint heart and lung transplant in 1983.
He established the heart transplantation Centre at Harefield Hospital.
Awards
In 1998, he was elected “Fellow of the Royal Society”.
He also received a “Lifetime outstanding achievement” award in acknowledgement of his contribution to medicine, from the Secretary of State for Health (UK).
The surgeon was given a Ray C. Fish Award for Scientific Achievement in Cardiovascular disease in 1998 by the Texas Heart Institute.
