About Maurice Gamelin
Maurice Gamelin, the French army commander-in-chief at the start of World War II, is known in history for his inability to stop the German assault on France in May 1940, which led to the French surrendering in June of that year.
Early Life
The army general was born and raised by his father, Zéphyrin Gamelin, who was also a soldier. He graduated from the Saint-Cyr military academy in 1893 and served as a brigadier general in command of a division at the end of World War I.
Career
After the war, Gamelin steadily ascended through the ranks, eventually becoming army chief of staff in 1931, president of the Supreme War Council and later, army inspector in 1935. In 1938, he was appointed chief of staff for national defense. As commander of the Allied troops in the West when World War II broke out, Gamelin took no precautions, despite the fact that most German forces were engaged in Poland at the time.
After The Fall of France
The German attack caught him off guard through the Ardennes region in 1940, which split the Allied front in half. The French Vichy regime later fired him and put him on trial. He later died in 1958.
