He was an American musician who was a composer and a drummer.
Personal Life
Maxwell Lemuel Roach was the name given to him when he was born to Cressie Roach and Alphonse Roach. His mother was a musician and encouraged him to study music. He studied at Boys High School and later got into Manhattan School of Music. In 1949, he married Mildred Roach and had two children with her. When the marriage ended, he got together with Barbara Jai and had a son with her. In 1961, he made Abbey Lincoln his wife but they went their separate ways in 1970. The following year, he had twins with his new wife Janus Adams Roach.
Career
He started recording professionally in 1943 and in 1952, he put together Debut Records with Charles Mingus who was a bassist. Some of his works are “Boston Percussion Ensemble” in 1958, “The Defiant Ones with Booker Little” in 1958, “The Many Sides of Max” in 1958 and “Moon Faced and Starry Eyed with Abbey Lincoln” in 1959.
Death
He later had dementia and Alzheimer which claimed his life in the year 2007. Already, he was suffering from hydrocephalus.
