About Moneta Sleet Jr.
Sleet was a Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer acclaimed for his numerous images that depicted the story of the fight for racial equality in the U.S. and Africa.
Early Life
The Kentucky State alumnus knew he was meant for a life in photography from childhood. At a young age, his parents gave him a small box camera with which he took family pictures.
Notable Facts
Much of his career was spent working with African American publications such as Ebony Magazine. In 1955, during his time at Johnson Publishing, he had the privilege to tour such African countries as Ghana, Kenya, and Liberia on a journalistic mission.
His career offered him the opportunity to meet and build a life-long friendship with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Notable among his assignments were his reportage of King’s Nobel Peace Prize acceptance in 1964 and the Selma to Montgomery March the following year.
Award
Among his many awards, Sleet received a Citation for Excellence from the Overseas Press Club of America.
Trivia
After the assassination of Dr. King, Moneta Sleet photographed King’s funeral service which was held at the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia.
