About Noah Webster
Noah Webster was initially trained as a lawyer, but had to abandon the profession due to lack of opportunities. In 1793, he became the editor of a newspaper owned by the Federalist Party after he was hired by Alexander Hamilton. Five years later he was elected into the Connecticut House of Representatives.
The American author and lexicographer found fame in 1806 when he published his maiden dictionary entitled “A Compendious Dictionary of the English Language”. He also played a key role in developing the Copyright Act in 1831.
Family
He was raised by his parents Noah Webster Sr. and Mercy Steele. He had eight kids with Rebecca Greenleaf whom he married in 1879.
Education
He studied at Yale College.
Trivia
He studied alongside American educator Ezra Stiles.
In 1971, he established the Connecticut Society for the Abolition of Slavery.
