About Paul Langevin
Paul Langevin, a French physicist best known for the theory on ultrasonic echography, also created Langevin dynamics and the Langevin equation. He was one of the original members of the Comité de vigilance des intellectuels antifascistes.
Personal Life
He enrolled at the University of Paris (aka Sorbonne) in 1891, but his studies were halted for a year due to military service in 1893. He was appointed professor of Physics at the Collège de France in 1904.
Death
He died in Paris in 1946, two years after witnessing the city's liberation from German forces.
Scientific Works
He is revered for his work on paramagnetism and diamagnetism. The scientist developed the contemporary interpretation of this phenomenon in terms of electron electric charges within atoms. His most notable contribution was the use of ultrasound in conjunction with Pierre Curie's piezoelectric effect. During WWI, he began researching the potential of these noises to detect submarines using echolocation. However, by the time he had it functioning, the war was done.
