About Philip Kaufman
Award-winning American filmmaker Philip Kaufman was known for his horror, fantasy and romantic movies over his six-decade profession. His works include “The Wanderers”, “Henry & June”, “Rising Sun” and “Quills”. The Illinois-born also made appearances in films such as “Lumps of Joy”, “The Unbearable Lightness of Being” and “Adventures in Moviegoing”.
Family
He was the only son of his parents Elizabeth (Brandau) and Nathan Kaufman. He met Rose Fisher at the University of Chicago in 1957 and they tied the knot the following year in 1958. They had a son together named Peter.
Education
He studied history at the University of Chicago before proceeding to Harvard Law School.
Early Career
While in school, he worked as a postal officer, where he met American novelist Henry Miller. He was also an English and Math tutor for two years in Greece and Italy. Henry would later influence Kaufman’s 1990 film “Henry and June”.
Film Directing
The filmmaker released his first work, a “mystical comedy” film titled “Goldstein” in 1964. He wrote and directed the film with Benjamin Manaster. Kaufman derived inspiration for the film from “Tales of the Hasidim”, a Martin Buber story. “Goldstein” won the “Prix de la Nouvelle Critique” at the 1964 Cannes Film Festival.
In 1967, he produced “Fearless Frank” a film he both wrote and directed. The film, which starred Jon Voight and Monique van Vooren, was not as successful as “Goldstein”, however, it led the filmmaker to later work with Universal Pictures, an American film production and distribution company.
Five years after “Fearless Frank” Kaufman produced “The Great Northfield Minnesota Raid”, which starred Robert Duvall and Cliff Robertson. He went on to produce “The White Dawn” in 1974 and “The Outlaw Josey Wales” two years later.
“The Right Stuff”, a true- life film which Kaufman directed in 1983 was considered his biggest hit. The film was hugely successful as it bagged eight Academy Award nominations, including “Best Cinematography” and “Best Picture”. The film took home four Academy Awards on the night, including “Best Film Editing” and “Best Sound Effects Editing”.
Awards
He won the 1984 London Film Critics’ Circle Award for “Screenwriter of the Year” for his film “The Right Stuff”.
Kaufman won the Saturn Award for “Best Director” in 1978 for his movie “Invasion of the Body Snatchers”.
