About Philippe Leclerc de Hauteclocque
WWII was a time of agony and huge loss across the world. It saw valiant soldiers give their lives for their country, and one of the brave soldiers who fought was Philippe François Marie Leclerc de Hauteclocque. The French General made his name known as Marshal of France posthumously in 1952.
Growing Up
The Army General was born to Marie-Thérèse van der Cruisse de Waziers and Adrien de Hauteclocque de Hauteclocque. Since he came from an aristocratic family, it meant that he had to enroll and graduate from École spéciale militaire de Saint-Cyr which was a French Military Academy in 1924. He was also a graduate of École Spéciale Militaire and Cavalry School.
Military Career
Philippe de Hauteclocque was one of the commanders who refused to accept defeat in 1940 and fought for Free France. His initial duty was to bring together the Free French Forces in French Equatorial Africa. Hauteclocque led raids against the Italian soldiers in Libya from bases in Chad. Following the Allied victory in North Africa, Leclerc was able to merge units from Free France and the former Vichy Army in the new 2nd French Armored Division.
Personal life
The Army General married Therese de Gargan from 1925–1947. Hauteclocque died in a plane crash in 1947 and was survived by a child.
Awards
Hauteclocque was awarded a Military Medal in 1946 and the Companion of the Order of Liberation in 1941.
