About Rafer Johnson
Rafer Lewis Johnson was in high school when his coach took him to see American decathlon legend, Bob Mathias at the trials for the 1952 Olympics. Obviously inspired, he ventured into the sports and by 1954, had broken the sport’s world record at the University of California, Los Angeles as a freshman.
The decathlete represented the United States in the 1955 Pan American Games and the Summer Olympic games of 1956 and 1960. Upon retiring from the sports, he began a career as an actor.
Family Life
From birth until the age of nine, he was raised in Hillsboro, Texas. Afterwards, he lived with his family in Kingsburg, California. He had a brother named Jimmy who played as a football cornerback. He had two children, Jennifer and Joshua, with his wife, Elizabeth Thorsen.
Achievements
He won gold medals at the 1960 Olympics and the 1955 Pan American Games.
Death
He passed away at the age of 86 on December 2, 2020, from a stroke.
