About Raymond Spruance
A former commander of the U.S. naval forces during the Battle of the Philippine Sea, Raymond Ames Spruance was an American Navy admiral whose service to his country is best remembered for his achievements during World War II.
Early Beginnings
He was born to Alexander Spruance and Annie. Spruance graduated from Short Ridge High School after attending a number of public schools in Indianapolis. After his high school education, he joined the U.S. Naval Academy where he graduated with impressive scores in 1906.
Military Career
In the army, Spruance was part of the crew on the battleship USS Iowa and later in 1907 got transferred to the battleship Minnesota.
Working on the battleship Pennsylvania, he and his team members aided in its operations for a year before being assigned to the New York Naval Shipyard, working there as an assistant engineering officer.
In 1926, Spruance studied at the Naval War College and later graduated in 1927. He was awarded the position of Rear Admiral in 1938 and commanded the battleship USS Mississippi.
Battle of the Philippine Sea
In 1944, during the invasion of the U.S. force in Saipan, he steered his unit in securing victory over the fleet of the Japanese in the famous battle of the Philippine Sea.
Death
On December 13, 1969, at the age of 83, Spruance died from complications of Arteriosclerosis.
