Ronald Lee Milsaps, professionally known as Ronnie Milsap, is one of the most revered and celebrated American country music singers. In the 1970s and 1980s, he was arguably America’s most influential country music singer. Although he was blind from birth, he learned the piano and became one of the best instrumentalists of country music.
Background & Early Life
The musician was born in Robbinsville, North Carolina. Unfortunately, he was born with a congenital disorder that left him blind.
He attended the Governor Morehead School for the blind, where he learned classical music and mastered several musical instruments. He also briefly enrolled at Young Harris College. Then, in 1964, he left college and pursued a full-time musical career.
Career Highlights
He recorded his first song, “Total Disaster/It Went to Your Head” in 1963. In 1965, he signed with Scepter Records and scored the hit song “Never Had it So Good” with Ashford & Simpson. His debut album, “Ronnie Milsap” was released in 1971.
He is noted for crossover hits in the 1960s & 70s, such as “Any Day Now”, “Stranger in My House” and “Smoky Mountain Rain.”
Awards & Honors
As of 2021, he had won six Grammy Awards and gained 35 number one country music hits. The veteran musician is a Country Music Hall of Famer.
