About Serge Reggiani
The Italian-French artist had a melancholic tone that won him a large French fan base. Though he was best recognised as an actor and singer, he was also involved in political activism.
Early Life
Born in Italy, his family escaped the fascist government and settled in France in 1931. In pursuit of a movie career, he moved to Paris and landed a role in Jon Cocteau's play “Les enfants terribles.”
As Actor
He got his major break when he starred in his debut feature film “Les portes de la nuit” (“Gates of the Night”). This set the tone for a stream of films, including “The 25th Hour,” “Le chat et la souris,” “Fantastica,” and “Héroïnes”. He was also cast in the internationally acclaimed 1958 film “Les Misérables”. The film, which was directed by French film director Jean-Paul Le Chanois, was based on Victor Hugo’s work of the same title. In the film, Reggiani starred as Enjolras, alongside Jean Gabin and Bernard Blier.
As Singer
In his early 40s, he pursued a musical career and released such songs as “Les loups sont entrés dans Paris” and “La femme qui est dans mon lit.”
Personal Life
His son, Stephan, battled with deep depression and eventually took his own life in 1980. In the 1970s, he won the heart of dancer Noëlle Adam. After a long-term romance the two got married in 2003.
