He gained notoriety after the release of the film adaptation of his monologue "Swimming to Cambodia." Growing up in a dismal milieu, he began his career in experimental theater composing monologues based on his own life.
He was also known for notable roles in various successful films and television programs, including "Seven Minutes in Heaven," "Monster in a Box," "Bad Company," and "Twenty Bucks," in addition to the aforementioned.
