About Stephen Crane
In spite of his short life, Stephen Crane left a legacy as one of his generation’s most innovative writers. Besides his poems, mostly of the realism movement, he also wrote short stories and novels.
He abandoned his studies at Syracuse University in favour of working as a writer and reporter in 1891. Two years later, his debut novel, “Maggie: A Girl of the Streets” was published.
His other well-known novels include “The Open Boat” and “The Red Badge of Courage”. From the age of 25 until his death, he served as a war correspondent for the Greco-Turkish War and the Spanish-American War.
Family Life
He was the son of a Methodist Episcopal Church clergyman, Jonathan Townley Crane and his wife, Helen Peck Crane. His maternal grandfather, George Peck was also a clergyman of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He had eight siblings who survived infancy. He had a common-law marriage with fellow writer, Cora Taylor.
Death
He died on June 5, 1900 following multiple pulmonary haemorrhages.
