About Walter Becker
This Grammy-winning guitarist was the co-founder of the rock band Steely Dan, which is known for their acclaimed album “Two Against Nature”.
Background
A neighbor taught Becker how to play the saxophone and guitar while he was at Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan. He met and befriended Donald Fagen while they both attended Bard College. They formed the band Leather Canary with actor Chevy Chase.
Career
Becker and Fagen moved to Los Angeles and formed the Steely Dan band in 1971 with other members Denny, Jeff, Jim, and David Palmer. The band went on tour until 1974. But sadly the band broke up in 1981. Becker worked with several artists such as Michael Franks, John Beasley, and Rickie Lee Jones.
The band came back together and released their first album “11 Tracks of Whack” in 1994. The second album “Two Against Nature” was released in 2000 and won four Grammy awards. Beckers was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Long Island Music Hall of Fame.
Death
Becker was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in early 2017 and sadly passed away in September 2017.
