William-Adolphe Bouguereau is one of the dominant names in the history of French art. Bougeureau was a renowned French academic painter whose works received much attention and following in France and the USA during the 19th century.
His paintings were often characterized by the use of mythological themes that integrate daring technique and originality. However, he often also focused on the conventional treatment of art on female body forms.
Career & Achievements
In 1846, Bouguereau enrolled in the School of fine arts in France (École des Beaux-Arts). Upon his completion, he was awarded an art scholarship at Prix de Rome.
He studied in Rome for about four years and returned to France. Soon after his return, his exhibitions at the Salon attracted many people who held him in the highest regard, making him arguably the most famous painter at the time.
In 1875, Bouguereau had the honor of being a drawing lecturer at Académie Julian. He also received several awards from the Academy of Fine Arts. In 1885, he was awarded the Grand Medal of Honor. He was then appointed as the Academy’s Legion of Honor Commander the same year and, in 1905, promoted to Grand Officer of the Legion of Honor.
Many historians have recorded that he completed 822 known paintings. He is also known for the Pre-Raphaelite designs in chapels in France and Rome.
