About Bayard Rustin
Bayard Rustin was a very influential voice in American civil rights activism in the 20th century. He was a famous African American political leader who organized various campaigns against racism, homophobia, and other sensitive subjects of American society. Rustin was also a close friend and adviser to the famous Martin Luther King, Jr.
Early life & Education
He was from West Chester, Pennsylvania. Rustin enrolled at Wilberforce University in 1932. However, in 1936 he was expelled from the university after he organized a strike on campus. He later attended Cheyney State Teachers College.
Political Career & Activism
He was the president of the "A. Philip Randolph Institute between 1966 and 1979. In 1941, he worked alongside A. Philip Randolph in the organization of the "March on Washington Movement," which was a huge campaign to stop racial discrimination in the employment of citizens. Additionally, Rustin worked for the "Fellowship of Reconciliation" and formed "the Congress on Racial Equality" in the 1940s.
As Martin Luther King Jr's adviser, he organized various "Southern Christian Leadership" Conferences.
Controversies
In 1953, he was arrested for engaging in homosexuality and was jailed for 50 days. He faced various public abuses after the incident that reduced his political influence.

He died at age 75 on August 24, 1987, after battling with an appendix disease.
