About Dorothy Day
Dorothy Day was an American social activist and journalist of the 20th century. Her works were mostly about social justice and promoting women's suffrage and pacifism through the powers of the Catholic Church.
Background & Early Life
Both of her parents worked as journalists in New York and California. She enrolled at the University of Illinois between 1914 and 1916. Then, however, she quit college and moved to New York City. In New York, Day was actively involved in the activities of a liberal and literary group. She also worked as a journalist, interviewing many public figures and writing for many socialist publications.
Activism
The catholic faith intrigued Day for years, and in 1927, she converted. She then co-founded her newspaper, "The Catholic Worker" in 1933. The newspaper promoted catholic teachings and tackled issues of social injustice in society.
She was arrested for her social and political protests severally. In 1917, she protested at the front of the White House as part of her campaign to push for the rights of women to vote.
Death
She died at the age of 83, on November 29, 1980, after suffering from a cardiac arrest. She was later given the title "Servant of God" after her canonization by the Catholic Church.
