Growing Up
The First Lady was born into a wealthy family and was the daughter of Lawrence Kortright and Hannah Kortright. As a child from a wealthy home, she acquired a strong social standing and was made to attend important gatherings at an early age.
Career
From 1817 to 1825, Elizabeth Monroe served as the first lady of the United States and the wife of James Monroe, the fifth president of the United States. Before that, when Madame La Fayette, wife of the Marquis de Lafayette, learned of her captivity and threatened her with execution, she helped gain her freedom. The Monroes also helped and housed American citizen and famous author Thomas Paine in Paris after he was detained for opposing Louis XVI's execution.
Personal life
Elizabeth tied the knot with her husband, James Monroe, in 1786. She died in 1830 and was survived by 3 children.
