About Frank Whittle
Frank Whittle was accepted into the Royal Air Force College in 1923. He started attracting attention four years later after flying an aircraft on his own. He graduated from the academy in 1928 and was made a pilot officer.
Career
Later that year, he came up with an idea to construct a turbojet which he submitted to his senior officers. He worked on his idea the following year, and in 1930 his first-ever patent for the turbojet was submitted.
His invention came years before the work of Hans von Ohain, who has been credited for inventing the operational jet engine. He was also one of the founders of the jet engine manufacturing company known as Power Jets Ltd.
Family
He was the first child of Sara Alice Garlick and Moses Whittle. This engineer was married to Hazel Hall. Prior to their union, he was the husband of Dorothy Lee.
Education
He attended Leamington College for Boys before joining the RAF.
Recognitions
His service in the Royal Air Force earned him many honors like the Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire, the Commander of the Legion of Merit and the Prince Philip Medal.
Fun Facts
In 2015, the Sir Frank Whittle Studio School was opened in his honor.
One of Midland Air Museum’s hangars has been named after him.
He also worked with the U.S. Naval Academy as a NAVAIR Research Professor.
