About Guy S. Meloy Jr.
General Guy Stanley Meloy, Jr. was a combat veteran of World War II (WWII) and the Korean War. The military man advanced through the ranks to hold various positions, including Commander-in-Chief of the United Nations Command. His contribution to the Korean War in the 1950s earned him the Distinguished Service Cross.
Biography
He was accepted to the US Military Academy at West Point, NY, after completing his studies at McKinley Technology High School in Washington, DC. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in science and a commission as a second lieutenant of the infantry.
He was chief of staff of the 103rd Infantry Division and served in the first tank destroyer battalion during WWII. After the War, he taught military science and tactics at Texas A&M University and served as the 24th Infantry Division's commander. He was severely injured while serving in the Korean War in 1950.
He oversaw the 5th Army and the 1st Infantry Division while serving as the Department of the Army's Chief of Public Information. He became the 8th Army commanding general, the U.S. Forces Korea commander, and the head of the UN Command (1961). After more than four decades in the military, he retired in 1963. He served as mayor of Terrell Hills in Bexar County, Texas.
Personal Life
He tied the wedding knot with Therese Susan in 1960. Prior to that he was married to Catherine, who passed away in 1959.
