Jose Cruz, a former professional baseball player, garnered appreciation from teammates and spectators both on and off the field for his unwavering commitment to hard work. He was a two-time All-Star who led the National League in hits in 1983, hit.300 or more six times for the Astros, and won two Silver Slugger Awards.
Early Years
Born on August 8, 1947 in Arroyo, Puerto Rico, Jose Cruz is the oldest of three brothers. He excelled in track while attending Arroyo High School.
Career
Out of high school, in 1966, he signed with the St. Louis Cardinals. In 1970, he signed with St. Louis to make his Major League Baseball debut after having previously played in the minor league for a number of teams, including St. Petersburg, Modesto, and Little Rock.
In 1974, the Astros acquired José Cruz. He became the team's top hitter in 1977 while hitting. 299 with 17 home runs, 87 RBIs, and 44 stolen bases. He also played for the New Yankees in 1988.
He was chosen to play in his first All-Star Game, and was voted as the Astros team MVP in 1980.
Cruz worked as the first base instructor and community outreach executive with the Houston Astros for a number of years after his playing days.
